Boston Brown Bread Muffins

In colonial Boston, families like John and Abigail Adams enjoyed hearty, simple breads made with local ingredients. This kid-friendly version of Boston Brown Bread turns the traditional loaf into fun, easy-to-make muffins!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

  • 1 cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup rye flour (or substitute all-purpose flour)

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¾ cup molasses

  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar)

  • ½ cup raisins (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a muffin tin.

  2. In a large bowl, mix whole wheat flour, cornmeal, rye flour, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In another bowl, stir together molasses and buttermilk.

  4. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. (Don’t overmix!)

  5. If using, fold in raisins for a little extra sweetness.

  6. Fill the muffin cups about ¾ full and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  7. Let cool and enjoy with butter or honey—just like the Adams family might have!
