Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States, taking office after Franklin D. Roosevelt passed away in 1945. He led the country through the end of World War II and helped shape the modern world. But there’s more to Truman than just history books! Here are six fun and kid-friendly facts about him.
1. The "S" in His Name Doesn’t Stand for Anything
Most people have a middle name, but Harry Truman’s middle initial, S, doesn’t actually stand for anything! His parents gave him the letter “S” to honor both of his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young.
2. He Was a Poor Eyewitness
As a kid, Truman had very bad eyesight, which meant he couldn’t see the blackboard at school! Instead of playing sports, he spent a lot of time reading history books, which helped him later as president.
3. He Opened a Bowling Alley in the White House
Truman loved bowling, so he had the first White House bowling alley built in 1947! The original alley was removed, but a new one was later built under the Eisenhower administration, and it’s still used by presidents today.
4. He Was the Last U.S. President Without a College Degree
Unlike most modern presidents, Truman never went to college! He wanted to attend West Point, but his bad eyesight kept him from getting in. Instead, he worked on his family farm and later became a politician.
5. He Had a Famous Motto on His Desk
On Truman’s desk in the White House, there was a famous sign that read: "The Buck Stops Here." This meant that he took full responsibility for his decisions as president and didn’t pass the blame to others.
6. He Was a Piano Player
Truman was a talented piano player and even dreamed of becoming a concert pianist before entering politics! As president, he once played piano for an audience that included actress Lauren Bacall, who famously sat on the piano while he played!
